Drift Ice
Dawn is a giant, another realm to enter. His orbit is captured by a rocky planet, a thousand times bigger than the Sun. On a clear day, you will hear his heart boom and echo in the void, light years away, cracking like drift ice in the sea of Okhotsk.

This artwork was inspired by a morning walk. Birdsong filled the air, the cawing of crows. It echoed hard between buildings, a haunting orchestra. The sky was beginning to brighten over the hill. It seemed to stretch into outer space, drawing me up where a line of darkness still clung.
I was reminded that we inhabit a planet in a dark galaxy. It is not dawn everywhere. The universe is vast. Much more exists beyond the scope of our sight. There is so much more to this world.
Back in my studio, I began this painting by working on a moody sky. First I mixed red and blue, quite purple, now quite blue. I added white to see what was going on, a dash of yellow. Too brown now. I tried it anyway. A good dark cloud. Good. I mixed this with more blue, more blue, more blue, then white. Good. A nice shade. Oh, too much white. I blended these who parts together on the canvas with my finger, loving the way it fused, so soft. More. I continued to use my finger to mix the paint, both on the palette and then directly on the canvas. Things were going well… I felt a rift healing, a connection…
