The Half Truth
This painting has been rendered first in charcoal, then highlights were added using white acrylic. The scene depicts a pathway through the countryside, telling the story of a perilous journey through the dark towards a small cottage, which may either be a place of refuge or a haunted house.
This monochrome painting has an fictional quality, reminiscent of illustrations from my favourite childhood books. Barbed hedgerows and barren trees warn of danger and adversity, while clouds in the heavens are whipped by a harsh wind, scudding across a watchful sky.
The trees which enclose the house however are still, unaffected by the elements. Is the house magical? I like to think so, but one cannot be entirely sure…
Sometimes the night can play tricks on our mind, mixing fact with fiction, causing uncertainty, anxiety and paranoia. This painting is a reminder to wait until dawn before making any important decisions.
