The Whole Truth
Night has come. Her cloak drapes first on distant hills, sculpting shadows on the lawn, then makes mirrors of the glass. She climbs through the window, fingers soft as smoke, curling around lamplight, touching every surface. She presses a short message into your palm written longhand, only the truth, the whole truth. She will lay down with you to sleep, a sister in the dark, honest all the way back, until the break of dawn.
In the Northern hemisphere, night falls gradually, tiptoeing in until you find yourself sitting in darkness, shadows close around you, patiently waiting for you to notice. I consider this time as a friend and ally of my deepest wishes. For all its folklore, night asks nothing from us, only the truth.
All pretence can fall away to reveal the absolute truth - how we feel, what we need, who we truly love. There is such essential value in night’s darkness. There is natural power. Moonlight casts a different shadow. What we hold as true by day, shifts in nature to expose another face.
I created this artwork first with charcoal, drawing hard outlines which I then filled in, finally softening the edges. Then I added white acrylic which became a silvery moonlit blue. It was an exhilerating moment when the wet brush touched the dry charcoal. An unexpected fusion occured. Black met white, their union boundless and uncensored. I find myself wanting to return to this scene, both on and off canvas. I feel my heels kicking up the dust here, looking for life.
This painting is for you if you struggle to express your real self by day, if you feel more at ease, and come to life, after dark. You might also like its counterpart: The Half Truth (see Artworks).
