Autumn in Ireland

“…Now Autumn rubs her bosom in the dust,
and smears the clouds with Winter’s grimy skirt,
and all the swift are called to duty, home,
as peat smoke lifts into the eerie dusk…”
I painted this picture of my local area, inspired by that special time at the end of Summer when the evenings grow shorter. It’s like we only had the sun on loan, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, and now the Light has been called back to where it normally belongs.
The scent of the air changes as Autumn begins. The wind begins to feel cooler. You start to crave long sleeves, wool and natural fibres next to your skin. Silhouettes are defined against dramatic sunsets. The streets begin to empty of children. The weather becomes wild and unpredictable. People begin to hurry.
Harvest is a time to reap what you have sown, a practice more important now than never before as Earth’s climate becomes less hospitable. Autumn invites a period of reflection and introspection, slowing down, hibernation, gathering and feasting.
